Educational Philosophy
Cedarwoods Schoolhouse is a learning community of adults, youth and children. We see the education of the child in the first stages of life, (K-8) as only one part of the human being’s life from birth to death. Our educational choices reflect the spiritual and emotional developmental need of the child of these ages as well as his or her intellectual developmental needs.
Cedarwoods community is a place that fosters kinship with the natural world and a feeling of reverence for it. It is that place where our senses are stirred by natural materials and the beauty of gardens and trees, where children play wholesome traditional games for learning, where we are diverse in our cultures, languages, and colors, but not our values.
Cedarwoods education is based on the understanding that the key to developing problem solving skills for the 21st century is an active imagination and a commitment to pursuing one's purpose in life.
Spiritual confidence, intellectual flexibility, and social responsibility, will be essential to our children's success as creative and responsible human beings. To nurture these characteristics, the Cedarwoods curriculum carefully balances spiritual, academic, artistic, and practical activities to stimulate the imagination and prepare our students for a successful life.
Rather than relying on rote memorization of standardized information, Cedarwoods Schoolhouse seeks to engage the whole child in the learning process. Subjects are taught artistically, with movement, drawing, painting, singing, storytelling, and rhythm. Teachers bring the curriculum to life and endow the developing child with a lifelong sense of wonder and a joy of learning.
The education of the child begins at home, with the first teachers and life-long role models, their beloved parents. Cedarwoods believes in strengthening and nurturing that love and respect bond that is essential between parent and child. Cedarwoods, therefore, offers resources, seminars, study circles and workshops for parents and urges every family to be involved as active members of the school community. We are committed to developing the intellect of the next generation to approach all demands and joys of life in a manner that is rooted in the beauty of our religion.
